Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is tuna. Tuna is an oily marine fish not only high in protein but also omega 3 fatty acids, essential oils needed by every cat to sustain life.

This item is typically sourced from clean, undecomposed whole fish and fish cuttings of commercial fish operations.  1

The second ingredient is water, which adds nothing but moisture to this food. Water is a routine finding in most wet cat foods.

The third ingredient is ocean fish. This item is typically sourced from clean, undecomposed whole fish and fish cuttings of commercial fish operations.  2

Unfortunately, the phrase “ocean fish” is vague and does little to adequately describe this ingredient.  Since some fish are higher in omega-3 fats than others, it’s impossible for us to judge the quality of this item.

In any case, fish meat is naturally rich in the 11 essential amino acids required by a cat to sustain life.

The fourth ingredient is goat milk. Goat’s milk is rich in calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D.  It contains slightly less lactose and can be considered nutritionally similar to cow’s milk.

The fifth ingredient is sunflower seed oil. Sunflower oil is nutritionally similar to safflower oil.  Since these oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids and contain no omega-3’s, they’re considered less nutritious than canola or flaxseed oils.

Sunflower oil is notable for its resistance to heat damage during cooking.

There are several different types of sunflower oil, some better than others.  Without knowing more, it’s impossible to judge the quality of this ingredient.

The sixth ingredient is tapioca starch. The source of this starch is unknown but it is most likely derived from corn or wheat.  Without more information, it’s impossible to adequately judge the quality of this ingredient.

The seventh ingredient is tricalcium phosphate, a beneficial source of calcium and phosphorus.  In addition, this additive is used in wet foods as an emulsifier – an agent designed to disperse a food’s fats more evenly in water.

The eighth ingredient is calcium carbonate, likely used here as a dietary mineral supplement.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This recipe has 2 notable exceptions.

Taurine, an essential amino acid for cats associated with the healthy function of heart muscle and eye sight, and is crucial for maintaining good health in cats.

We view the presence of Taurine in this recipe as a positive addition.

Next, this recipe contains fructooligosaccharide, an alternative sweetener3 probably used here as a prebiotic. Prebiotics function to support the growth of healthy bacteria in the large intestine.
