Ingredients Analysis

The first ingredient is chicken. Chicken is considered “the clean combination of flesh and skin derived from the parts or whole carcasses of chicken”. 1

Chicken is naturally rich in the 11 essential amino acids required by a cat to sustain life.

The second ingredient is chicken broth. Broths are of only modest nutritional value. Yet because they add both flavor and moisture to a cat food, they are a common component in many wet products.

The third ingredient is chicken liver, an organ meat sourced from a named animal and thus considered a beneficial component.

The fourth ingredient is tapioca starch, a gluten-free, starchy carbohydrate extract made from the root of the cassava plant.

The fifth ingredient is sunflower oil. Sunflower oil is nutritionally similar
to safflower oil. Since these oils are high in omega-6 fatty acids and contain no omega-3s, they’re considered less nutritious than canola or flaxseed oils.

Sunflower oil is notable for its resistance to heat damage during cooking.

There are several different types of sunflower oil, some better than others. Without knowing more, it’s impossible to judge the quality of this ingredient.

The sixth ingredient is calcium chloride, likely used here as a dietary calcium supplement.

The seventh ingredient is minerals. Minerals are included in this ingredients list, as in Europe ingredients are declared a little differently. In the US our nutritional additives are listed within our ingredients list. In Europe, ingredients and additives are listed separately. For that reason the category of minerals can be included, to include those elements which are classed as an ingredient, rather than an additive, such as calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide. These elements contribute to the nutritional balance of a food and we see their inclusion as a positive.

The eighth ingredient is fish oil. Fish oil is naturally rich in the prized EPA and DHA type of omega-3 fatty acids. These two high quality fats boast the highest bioavailability to dogs and humans.

Depending on its level of freshness and purity, fish oil should be considered a commendable addition.

From here the list goes on to include a number of other items. But to be realistic, ingredients located this far down the list (other than nutritional supplements) are not likely to affect the overall rating of the product.

This food also contains chelated minerals that have been chemically attached to protein. This makes them easier to absorb. Chelated minerals are usually found in better cat foods.

Nutrient Analysis

Based on its ingredients alone, RAWZ Shredded Chicken & Chicken Liver Cat Food Recipe looks like an above-average wet product.

The dashboard displays a dry matter protein reading of 61.1%, a fat level of 8.3% and an estimated carbohydrate level of 22.6%.

As a group, the brand features an above-average protein content of 61.1% and a below-average fat level of 8.3%. Together these figures suggest a carbohydrate content of 22.6% for the overall product line, alongside a fat to protein ratio of 14%.

This means this RAWZ shreds range contains higher than average protein, lower than average carbohydrate and lower than average fat, when compared to typical wet cat food.

Final Word

This range of food is packed with good quality proteins such as animal meat and organs, along with fish.  It is low in carbohydrate and rich in fat and moisture and has added vitamins and minerals making this a very good set of recipes to choose from.

The Ca tFood Advisor recommends this food.
